Is SIP or lumpsum better?

Neither is universally better. If you already hold a large sum and markets keep rising, a lumpsum tends to earn more because the full amount stays invested for longer. If you earn a monthly salary, or you want to avoid the risk of investing everything just before a fall, a SIP is the more practical and lower-stress choice. Most salaried Indians invest through SIP simply because that is how their income arrives.

Does lumpsum give higher returns than SIP?

Over long, mostly rising markets a lumpsum often ends up ahead because every rupee is exposed to growth from day one, while an SIP deploys money gradually and part of it compounds for a shorter time. Studies on Indian equity indices suggest lumpsum beats an equivalent SIP the majority of the time over long horizons, but with deeper interim drawdowns. In falling or volatile markets the SIP can win because it keeps buying at lower prices.

What is an STP and when should I use it?

A Systematic Transfer Plan (STP) parks your lumpsum in a low-risk fund, usually a liquid or debt fund, and moves a fixed amount into an equity fund every week or month. It is the natural middle path when you have a large sum but are nervous about deploying it all at once. You earn a modest return on the un-deployed money while spreading your equity entry over several months to reduce timing risk.

Should I invest a bonus as lumpsum or SIP?

For a one-time inflow such as a bonus, a maturity payout or a gift, you already have the money in hand, so a monthly SIP would leave most of it idle in a savings account. The efficient options are a straight lumpsum if you are comfortable with market timing, or an STP over three to six months if you want to average your entry. Keep any money you need within a year or two out of equity entirely.
