- Bank transfer / UPI / Cheque: No revenue stamp needed
- Stamp value: ₹1 in most states

Paying Rent to Parents
You can legally pay rent to your parents and claim HRA exemption if you follow these rules:
- Parents must actually own the property (registered in their name)
- Have a formal rent agreement between you and parents
- Generate and maintain rent receipts
- Pay through bank transfer for proof
- Parents must declare rental income in their ITR
Note: You cannot claim HRA by paying rent to your spouse. The property cannot be owned by you, your spouse, or your minor children.
HRA and New Tax Regime
HRA exemption is NOT available under the New Tax Regime which became default from FY 2024-25. If you're paying rent and want to claim HRA, you must:
- Opt for the Old Tax Regime
- Submit Form 10-IEA to your employer before the deadline
- Submit rent receipts and landlord PAN to your employer
Compare tax liability under both regimes using our Income Tax Calculator.
How to Submit Rent Receipts
- To Employer: Submit receipts during investment declaration (usually January-March)
- For ITR: Keep receipts for your records; attach only if asked during scrutiny
- Retention period: Keep receipts for at least 6 years
Frequently Asked Questions
How many months of rent receipts do I need?
For a full year HRA claim, you need 12 receipts (one per month). However, some employers accept quarterly receipts. Generate receipts for all months you paid rent and claimed HRA.
What if I forgot to collect rent receipts?
You can still generate receipts retrospectively and get them signed by your landlord. Ensure dates match your actual rent payment dates. If landlord is unavailable, you may face issues during tax scrutiny.
Can rent receipt be digital/electronic?
Physical receipts with original signature are preferred. However, digitally signed PDFs may be accepted. For cash payments, physical receipt with revenue stamp is recommended.
Is rent agreement mandatory along with receipts?
Rent agreement is not mandatory for HRA claim but strongly recommended. It serves as supporting evidence in case of IT scrutiny. Especially important when paying rent to relatives.
